After a long hiatus, the Wildcats took the ice again for a match up against the Washington Wolves last Saturday night. It was an excellent game.  For 45 minutes, the two teams slugged it out and battled hard for the "W."
Rust knocked off their skates, the Cats opened the scoring just :41 seconds into the game when forward Michele Forte got her 3rd goal of the season. The Wolves were able to answer back halfway through the period, tying the game, 1-1. The Wildcats continued to pummel the offensive zone trying to get back on the scoreboard. Then, with .09 seconds left in the period, Michele Forte roofed the puck with authority, ending the period 2-1. She was assisted by Lyne McCauley and Mary Garrison. Nice work, ladies!
The Wildcats went on a penalty kill early in the 2nd after defenseman Margaret Moran was called for a high-stick. The PK unit, consisting of Meghan Benson and Karen Frost, worked relentlessly and were rewarded with a shorty for their efforts. Defenseman Eve Borner was given the second assist. It was a spectacular goal for the Cats! Once again, the Wolves answered back late in the period when they were able to get around the Wildcats' defense. The second period ended with the score 3-2.
Things got even more interesting in the 3rd period when the Wolves tied the game after sliding the puck past the Wildcats' goalie on the far post. The Wildcats' coach called for a timeout. Afterwards, the Cats' retook the ice, undeterred and fought back hard during the last 8 minutes of the game. Meghan Benson scored the game winner with 5:02 remaining on the clock. Adding to the Cats' lead, Laura Zdenahlik scored off a rebound shot from Diane Sanders. Finally, with .35 left in the game, Lyne McCauley split the Wolves' defense at the Wildcat's blue line and turned on the afterburners, streaking into the Wolves' zone and scoring on a beautiful breakaway. Job well done, Cats!
Goalie Anita Wray did an outstanding job minding the Cats' net. Final score was 6-3. It was a great game and lots of fun!

Next up, the Wildcats face-off against the Firestorm this Saturday night at the Prince William Ice Center. Puck drops at 8:40. Be sure to get there early to get a good seat!
